Birthplace of Picasso, Malaga has much to live up to and does so with ease - it is a city renowned for its warm climate, its beautiful Moorish architecture and its ideal location on the Mediterranean Sea. A busy port city, Malaga is becoming known for its welcoming atmosphere and its tourist attractions: the Alcazaba fortress, the city's defensive walls, the Flavian Roman amphitheatre and theatre, the Gibralfaro Castle, the Malaga Cathedral and the Plaza de Toros bullring are amongst the highlights. The many museums and art galleries also feature prominently, with Museo Picasso Malaga, CAC Malaga and Mueseo Municipal some of the most popular. Malaga's proximity to the Costa del Sol makes it an ideal destination for summer holidays and the region does have a number of very popular beaches - both for water-sports and for sun-bathing. Excursions into the hinterlands are also popular with the Andalusia region nearby.
Malaga has good transportation links to both international and domestic locations. The port is a base for the Malaga-Melilla ferry route as well as being a stopping point for a number of cruise ships. Rail links to many domestic towns and cities within Spain are regular, including links to Cordoba, Seville and Granada. Air connections are also prolific, with Malaga Airport being one of the busiest in the region and the main point of contact for the Costa del Sol. Airlines such as easyJet, British Airways, bmi baby, FlyBe, First Choice Airways, Ryanair and Thomas Cook are amongst the many that use the complex. Exploring the surrounding region and its many beaches is highly recommended to be carried out by private car and thus car hire is a good idea - just make sure you book ahead if you are travelling in the peak season.
